Adjust notifications to stay informed without getting overwhelmed. You can set notifications for specific channels or mute those you want to check in on less frequently. For email updates when you’re offline, enable email notifications under Settings > Notifications.Complete Your Profile
Go to Profile & Account (usually accessed by clicking your icon in the top right) to add your full name, pronouns, and time zone. A clear profile photo and your preferred name make it easier for team members to connect with you.
Navigating Slack Channels
Channels are where we organize conversations and resources by topics. You can find your channels on the left sidebar. Below are some key channels to join:
Action Channels:
#virginia-legislation – Discuss legislative actions, learn about bills, and strategize outreach.
#volunteer– Find current opportunities with partner organizations to take action, from calling to canvassing.
Informational Channels:
#resources – A library of valuable guides, documents, and tools to help with organizing and outreach efforts.
#help – Post any questions or requests for assistance here. Friendly volunteers are ready to support you!
Community Channels:
#shout-outs – Celebrate team successes, acknowledge volunteer efforts, and build morale!
#share-your-pics – Share photos of your pets, inspiring signs, and anything else fun for some lighthearted connection.
Note: To join any channel, search for it in the Slack search bar, or click “+” next to Channels on the sidebar and browse.
Messaging and Interacting
Direct Messages (DMs)
DMs are for private conversations between you and another volunteer. Simply search for a person’s name in the Direct Messages section to start a private chat.Threads
To respond to a specific message in a channel, use threads to keep conversations organized. Click on a message and select Reply in thread to add your response directly below it without cluttering the main channel.Using Mentions
@here – Use sparingly to notify only those active in the channel.
@channel – Tags everyone in the channel and should be used only for important updates.
@username – Mention someone by their username to notify them directly.

Community Guidelines and Norms
At Roe Your Vote Virginia, we foster a respectful, supportive, and inclusive environment for all volunteers. Please follow these guidelines to help keep Slack positive and productive:
Be Respectful: Engage with others in a friendly and supportive way. Constructive feedback is welcome; negativity and disrespect are not.
Keep Channels Organized: Use threads and avoid unnecessary clutter. Each message thread allows others to follow along without overloading the main channel.
Ask Questions: We’re here to help! Don’t hesitate to post in #help if you’re unsure about anything.
